OFCOM have recently released about the broadband issues and speeds in UK. When you signup for broadband packages, ISP’s promises to provide upto 10MB, 20MB or even higher. But in-reality do we get these speeds. They use the term “upto” which keeps their back safe. But with the launch of the OFCOM report it is very clear what ISP’s promise and what customers do actually receive. In the report Virgin Fibre Optic Broadband came out very strong against its competitors in their 20MB broadband comparison and is twice as fast as BT, Sky and TalkTalk Broadband.
This is great news for all broadband new and existing users, now that a reliable broadband ISP is officially promising to deliver what it is advertising. See the full comparison here.
According to OFCOM research they concluded that cable broadband services delivers significantly faster speeds compared to DSL services, which means that Virgin Media’s 10MB and 20MB cable services delivers average download speeds of around twice as fast as DSL from other service providers. With the recent launch of 50MB cable service from Virgin Media, it was recorded that it was the fastest service giving an average of 36MB with single thread tests and around 46MB with multi-thread tests conducted by OFCOM. Why Does ISP’s use ‘up to’ to Specify Speed?
The reason ‘up to’ is used because download speeds are affected due to various factors and it out of any ISP’s control. Factors like how far are you from the exchange, the spec of your computer, how many people are online at the same time, heavy traffic and so on. Advertising ‘up to’ specifies that these above factors should be considered when taking the advertised speed into consideration. But Virgin Media promised to get as much close to the broadband speed that you will be paying for.
Is Virgin Broadband Totally Unlimited?
With Virgin Media Broadband cable service there is no restriction on the data allowance and no limit on the amount you can download, but as any other company they operate a ‘acceptable usage’ policy so to protect the majority of its customers from few users usually downloading heavily. For a domestic usage it is unlimited, so when you order cable service from Virgin Media you are assured that there is no hidden data allowance limit and you get heavy bill when you go over your given limit. Almost half of broadband users do not understand data allowance limits in-terms of Gigabytes (GB), so certain ISP’s charge quite heavy bills when they go over their allocated allowance. Be almost 100% confident that you will not get a heavy bill with Virgin Media cable broadband service.
